Motivated to help struggling students find love of learning

I love to teach and coach and think it is important to understand that everyone learns and grasps concepts in different ways. I do not have a specific teaching style other than positive because each child requires their own approach.
I have over 15 semesters of college courses most in the sciences. I find math and science to come easy to me if I am taught it in the right way and I would love to share that with struggling students out there. I have had experience in big and small schools, accelerated programs as well as normal classrooms so I have been exposed to a variety of learning environments.

More About This Tutor...

Soon after graduating the Vet Med Faculty and obtaining my DVM diploma, I started a career in university teaching at the same faculty, in the Department of Genetics. Between 1991 and 2002, I held a Teaching Assistant, Instructor, and then Assistant Professor position. I assisted and instructed undergraduate and graduate students in classroom and laboratory settings, revised curriculum and graduation requirements for the students, and created materials for lectures, seminars and final exams in Genetics. Also, I conducted and participated in interdisciplinary research projects and managed a laboratory for the diagnosis of genetic diseases in animals. Beginning July 2002, I worked in molecular genetics research at Iowa State University, and then for the past 4 years, in cell and molecular biology research at University of Iowa. During all this time I have tutored students in genetics, biolo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I don't have a style. When I left high school in rural Iowa I was told I was retarded and would never even be able to write a check. At age 38 when struggling through Iowa State my chem teacher sent me to be tested for learning disabilities and I had multiple learning disabilities but an above average IQ. I don't teach I allow the student to learn in an environment where they are listened to, talked with(not to) and treated like they have value and worth. I treat them the opposite way I was treated. And when they do well we cheer together!
I tutored for two years at the Iowa State University Tutors Office, Iowa State University, Ames, IA. I tutored anatomy, physiology, biology, zoology. I taught for one year at Graceland University, Des Moines, IA

A Little Bit About Me...

By far, the biggest issue I have found with students with difficulty learning mathematics or the sciences is that there is a lack of motivation to learn, primarily because they do not understand the implications of the knowledge in front of them. Because I have studied physics, mathematics, and completed the pre-medicine curriculum at my university, I am brimming with knowledge of these applications. Once my students have gained an understand of all the cool stuff we can do with knowledge in these avenues, they tend to absorb concepts much more readily. I have also found that my general excitement for the subjects I am teaching rubs off on my pupils.
Since my sophomore year of college, I have been tutoring students in mathematics, physics, and chemistry in both college and high school. I have also since been involved with biomechanical research at Des Moines University, where I cur ... read more

I believe all learners can be successful in their learning when presented with learning opportunities within their primary learning styles. I am patient and able to present information by creatively using visual, auditory, and participatory modes of learning. Differentiated instruction allows me to provide students with learning opportunities to meet their specific learning styles. When tutoring students I use questioning to determine student understanding and to allow students to discover what they already know. This method gives students confidence and an "I can" mentality.
I am a detail oriented professional driven by a strong work ethic and a process and results oriented philosophy. Using critical thinking and problem solving skills I analyze and evaluate student needs and concerns, set goals, and work collaboratively to attain student success. I have earned a BA in Biology and ... read more
