A Little Bit About Me...

As a student, I am driven to understand the nature of things. As a teacher, I work to help others understand them. From my experience, I have learned to be patient with people who are afraid of failure and to push students who are easily bored with basic work. I have earned a bachelor's degree in computer science because computers are the tool with the most potential to enable us to understand the world, second only to the mind. To this end, I encourage my students to think long and hard about the problem they want to solve before they put too much work on a false lead. I find that the better students are aware of this and struggling students become more enthusiastic about learning after they discover this.

I've taught and tutored students for 37 years in music theory and composition, music of Africa and Latin America, and mathematics through college freshman algebra. I have a diverse field of experience. I received a dual B.A. in Linguistics and Anthropology in 2006. This allows me to understand language tutoring at a deeper level than most tutors. This foundation has been augmented by 5 years of teaching experience in ESOL, History, Academic Writing, and Professional interview training which I have conducted all over the world. In 2009, I received my MA in applied linguistics. This degree worked as a capstone to perfect my teaching style in regards to ESL.
