I have been a substitute teacher for the past two years covering all grade levels from pre-k three up to senior year in high school. I am a Master's Degree candidate in Elementary Education at Wilmington University. I enjoy students at every level and am amazed at what a difference a year makes in their development. Previously, I worked as a copywriter and I spent a lot of years writing and editing. I really enjoy the one-on-one or small group approach to teaching, which is why tutoring is so appealing to me.
I like to incorporate a sense of humor in my teaching - I believe when children can relax they are much more open to learning. I am also sensitive to children's different learning styles whether they are visual, auditory or kinesthetic, and tailor my approach accordingly. No two sessions are ever the same! Each student has unique needs and challenges and my job is to work "th ... read more

I love talking to students. I endeavor to let each student know that I care and am willing to go the extra mile to help he, or she, "get it"! I want to "connect". I have a terrific sense of humor, and try to keep my students smiling. I think we learn more, through laughter. I try to keep everyone relaxed. I try to keep everything real. (I've realized that we learn, more easily, when we can apply what we are learning, to our every day lives.) I encourage questions. I want my students to realize that when they are with me, in the classroom, they are safe, i.e., it is OKAY to make mistakes! It's encouraged! How can we learn, if we don't "open up"? I won't give up -- on any student.
I have been writing for 30 years; I have been published over 200 times, in approximately 106 periodicals. In 2008, samples of my earliest writings, as well as recent-front page articles, fro ... read more

Over the past twenty years of classroom teaching, I have discovered that many children have different styles of learning. I have taken a few classes on Differential Instruction, and I am aware of different learning needs. Patience is paramount in working with older students who get frustrated when they do not get a concept easily The research writing class at Groves was very demanding; yet, I had twenty some students qualify to receive their CEA3 certificates and graduate from high school. it is my firm belief that all children CAN learn.
Having grown up in a family where education was highly valued. not only did I desire to attain my own college degree, but I was strongly devoted to the idea of helping educate others. I am keenly aware of how busy most students are, so my aim is for tutoring to feel like something they get to do and not something they have to do. Teaching revitalizes my own love for learning, a love I hope to impart in a gentle, patient manner. I believe in honoring the variance in learning styles, and I empower my students to engage with material in ways that feel natural to them.
I have implemented individualized reading and writing programs for students ranging from pre-K to adult; gave one-on-one attention to special needs students in phonics, context-based reading, and fact retention; cultivated students’ understanding of grammar/punctuation, sentence/paragraph construction, and general cohesiveness in creative and academic writing; worked one-on-one with high school students on SAT critical reading and writing sections, devoting extra attention to vocabulary expansion.

I enjoy helping people learn something new. I think anyone can do anything they put their mind to. I would allow the student time to get to know me so they would feel comfortable with me. Students sometimes feel too vulnerable to try things when they don't know someone because they do not want to make mistakes. I would let them know that the only way to get better at something is to make mistakes so they can learn from those mistakes by making the appropriate corrections. Confidence is key. Positive work ethics allow me to help and give students the confidence necessary to complete anything put before them.

As a teacher I believe that students learn best by doing, so I plan my lessons to engage students with meaningful activities that are mastered with hands on activity rather than teacher lead discussion.
I have worked in a wide range of business and educational settings and have worked with students from grade school to adult. When I earned my BS in English, with a thirty credit business minor, I already had fifteen years experience working in a family run retail store. I have since worked a range of jobs including teaching business, computer and English classes. I also worked as a computer systems installer, service manager and office manager. I bring to my teaching a wide range of experience combined with a strong understanding of my subject areas.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that education is continuous and requires participation by all involved parties, meaning students must be active and constant participants in their education as well as the teacher. I also understand that no two individuals learn in exactly the same manner causing my methods as a teacher to constantly change to best fit the needs of the individual. All students, children, adults, etc. can learn if given the right environment, support, and encouragement. My goal as a teacher is not only to educate but to give students the tools and knowledge with which to teach themselves in the future.

Tutoring is as personally a rewarding experience as learning. My philosophy is to help students understand that learning and becoming better writers, readers, and thinkers—better people, in fact—is something worth striving for. I have the patience, dedication, and knowledge necessary to help students articulate and meet their own goals, and I encourage them to ask questions and share ideas and opinions. The fresh environment I help foster is one of creativity, humor, and mutual respect. I welcome all students from diverse backgrounds, different majors and ages, who need help drafting, editing, researching and revising. One’s education is priceless, and I believe that all of my students can reach their potential and discover their own voice.
