As an honors graduate, I pursued most of my education within my communications degree. I will begin teaching a 15-20 person writing class of 4-6 graders at the YWCA in Boulder this month. This is similar to a youth organization I worked for in high school where I mentored a group of elementary age students and initiated a youth magazine where the participants could publish their own poetry and stories. My goal is to excite students about learning. I encourage my own children as well as those I teach in the classroom to focus first on finding at least one concept in each lesson that attracts them and about which they would like to know more. This philosophy helps to eliminate the student's perception that "I hate math" or "I'm not good at science." It is very similar to sports, you start off learning the techniques and then you must learn how you best apply them, and yes it takes practice.
