More About This Tutor...

Hi there, I have more than three years of experience in tutoring/teaching general chemistry at Humboldt State University. I started teaching supplemental chemistry courses as a sophomore and through my experiences I was able to bring the passing rate of my chemistry class from an average of 70% to 80%. I have loads of handouts and practice exams on many subjects that I have personally made in order to help students practice the subject of chemistry. During my studies I have taken many Physics and mathematics courses needed for the degree and feel comfortable with tutoring math up to Calc I and general physics. Due to some family emergencies I have been needed at home and want to keep my skills sharp and help students understand these tough subjects in an easier way.
My teaching style is to create a relaxed fun environment while learning, and to also be able to put terms in simple l ... read more

High school/college physics, math and Engineering tutoring

I have always enjoyed personal tutoring and TA experiences in the past. I firmly believe that teaching is a privilege, rather than just a responsibility. Teaching is about inspiring thinking and encouraging learning. As your tutor i will set goals for students to grow, and at the same time, allow the students to reasonably set their own long-term and short-term goals. I enjoy working with people in a relaxed friendly environment. I enjoy teaching, sharing and practicing mathematics, science and engineering. Schedule is flexible.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a few years out of high school, and I've taken several college classes. My AP knowledge spans almost every subject. I can help with almost all high school level classes and below. The various sciences are probably my best subjects, however my knowledge of Biology is fairly limited. I have tutored a few High School Freshman before in a program called "Senior Mentoring" I have also helped out a few family friends to get the grade to graduate.
This really depends on the subject, however, I like to do drills to keep basic skills sharp, and to learn new skills. Each student is different, and will need slightly adjusted methodology. I'm also very open to suggestion.

My teaching style involves fun and an active student. Self-discovery is the best way to learn and retain knowledge. I see myself as the facilitator; I give my students the tools, so they can figure out problems on their own and become more self-reliant. I treat each student according to his/her needs and I look for the most effective ways he/she learns. My first visit is just an assessment of where the student began to get lost regardless of the age or level. More often that not, they have to memorize their fractions to decimal to percentage conversion from 1/2 to 1/12. Given this underlying knowledge allows me to focus on the subject at hand. I usually recommend purchasing a Spark Notes or something similar for the subject as a ... read more

For the past 10 years, I have worked in my community, helping to better the lives of children. At age 15, I began mentoring young girls and volunteering for a non-profit organization, counseling developmentally delayed children and at-risk youth. I later went on to become a Behavioral Therapist, educating children with autism. My love for children (and passion for education) was the determining factor in the course of my college career. In addition to my Psychology degree, I also hold a certificate in Human Factors Engineering and recently published research in this field.

I believe that most subjects are not difficult to master. Most problems come from "under learning" the subject. Repetition may work for some subjects, but with math the student needs to understand WHY a process works. Once this is learned, the rest comes rather easily. When the student takes for granted a way to solve a problem, they are lost when the problem is presented in a different way. But, if the student understands the WHY, the presentation of the problem does not matter.
