If I am tutoring a young person I contact the teacher so that I can find out what areas the student needs review in. Many times the teacher will give me the resources and materials to use. Also, I like to use the guide books for each grade that are sold in stationary areas of most stores. For tutoring in reading I've found the Leapfrog Reading Program is very helpful. I like to meet my students at the library so that I can use the resources found in the library, including the computer. Many times I use educational games because are very useful tools in learning, and they are fun.

I have spent most of my career in helping students with learning challenges and other special needs. My strongest asset is that I am very good at teaching students on a one-to-one basis. I have tutored a lot of students who are considered to be slow learners or who have some kind of learning disability. When I first started in the education field, I helped to transition students from being in the least restrictive environment to going to a regular classroom. This is what use to be called mainstream education. I still use the skills that I learned an developed when I was doing mainstream education. I believe that many students who now go through inclusive learning classroom are left behind. They still need that mainstreaming link that is so often neglected. If you have elementary students who need to bridge the learning gap or they are somehow left behind and need to catch up in their edu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As I was once a child with a speech impediment, I received many services such as reading and writing and speech therapy throughout my elementary years. I feel it is important to help children and students receive the services they need to succeed as soon as possible. I believe students learn best with hands on experiences and in multiple modalities. I will adjust my teaching style to the learning style of the student. Some students are visual learning and some are auditory learners. Whichever style they may be, I will make sure to provide examples and activities that fit their needs. I have chosen a field that helps children and students because I feel it is important that students receive education from educators that care about their success and that want to make a difference in a child's life.

Because I was a "non-tradional" student, one with my own children, I knew several things from the start: first and foremost, I will always treat students the way I wish my own children are treated by their teachers. In addtion, I have an understanding that not all children, nor adults, learn the same and need to be offered a variety of experiences. My teaching style is one of a facilitator. I want to be the one delivery the lesson, modeling what our learning targets are, and allowing the students to achieve the goals based on the new information given.
I have taught now for 5 years. 6th grade for 2, 5th grade for 2, and tutored as well as substitute taught for several districts in the area. I love teaching and helping children to succeed. I believe that it is important for children to develop a life long love of learning. This should be accomplished through a safe and supportive environment and facilitated by a child-centered curriculum. I also believe students learn best when they can relate to what they are learning, as well as being immersed in it. This is best accomplished through integrated learning. I believe that a teacher is both a facilitator of learning as well as a positive role model. All children need the opportunity to explore themselves and figure out what they are good at and what they like, and I will be there to guide the children.

I love to work with children and excel at discovering what works best with each child. I have the ability to connect with children and make them feel at ease. This sets the stage for easier learning and less frustration. I not only make the students comfortable but their parents as well. Oftentimes, someone who is not related can teach easier than someone close to the family
As a mother of three children as well as a graduate of the New York State University school system, I am an avid reader and a natural proof reader.
