I like teaching by example -- that is, a given example of a real world problem that correlates with the subject at hand. I like to first define the objective desired, then work systematically toward achieving every step along the way with the tools at my disposal.
As a grad assistant in college, I worked for two years teaching students business software programs in a class room environment. I have also been a team leader in an engineering firm (Parsons Brinckerhoff) in which I liased constantly with both the public and field representatives.

My trigonometry teacher had me substitute teach his college algebra and trigonometry courses for him while he away. This was some of the most satisfying work I have ever done. When a student finally understood what I was explaining it was like you could see the light come on in their head. Not only did I help the student learn the topic but it made me feel good because I had helped them.

My experience is as broad as it is varied. When I taught at Sylvan, I taught every course they needed me to. When I taught professionally, I taught teams of scientists and then instructional designers. I'm comfortable with all ages and backgrounds.
Scaffolding and positive reinforcement describes my teaching style; combined with a healthy dose of humor and individual, associative modeling. Learning should be fun and challenging. Busy work doesn't have to take such a negative connotation.

My teaching style is defined by my father, a teacher and coach. Successful in both the classroom and on the athletic field, he made sure that each student and athlete knew what was expected of them. What was expected of them was a mixture of hard work, discipline, sacrifice, and success. Success measured not necessarily by winning, for example, but by doing the best one can do with the gifts they had been given. In the end each student and athlete would learn the fundamentals of the given subject/sport to later in life build upon for their pleasure and, if necessary, to apply in a career capacity.
My experience is broad and important. Coming from a family of educators and athletic coaches, I know how to use educational, volunteer and work experiences to the benefit of those in need of guidance and direction. With experiences in the fields of construction, engineering, water t ... read more

My career took another direction yet I continued my passion for teaching others through tutoring at local non-profits. Last year, I taught 8th grade math at a local public middle school. This past summer, I taught summer school to 3-5th graders in both math and English. This year, I continue teaching through tutoring at an elementary school.
