A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught preschool,elementary and adult students for the past 8 years. As a preschool teacher, I developed my own curriculum and taught 3 year olds. I also worked for four years as a elementary teacher for Douglas County School District, in which I was responsible for organizing and following state and district K-2 curriculum. More recently, I have been employed at Family Support Council of Douglas County to teach adults in a variety of classes. I designed my own parenting and support classes for adults.

Unfortunately, many individuals are given labels, especially regarding their learning capacity, and once that belief system is in place, the expectations are often lowered and self-esteem suffers. Born and raised in upstate New York, I graduated from Cornell University in the spring of 2000 with a B.S. in Biology. In 2003, after a short stay in the biotechnology world, I moved west to work for an outdoor science school in Southern California. I begin a lesson by asking a student what he or she knows about the topic. If they have any familiarity with the topic I ask about it and confirm or correct their preconceptions. If the subject lends itself to a real-world example or demonstration, I would offer this for thought. Finally I teach the core concept, connecting it to other concepts already understood by the student. There is usually more than one way to teach a concept. I take into account the learning style of the student. Written or diagrammatic methods might be more effective than verbal explanations. Pnemonics can be useful, but only if the underlying concepts are first taught.
