I chose to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, so I could study many different fields, rather than focus on only one. I was thrilled with reading and literature courses; history; fine arts; sociology and humanities. I have always had a love of reading and I was happy to share the joy of reading when I volunteered my time to help struggling and early readers in elementary school. In addition, I have developed and taught art classes for adults; as well as Sunday School classes for children.
I believe everyone learns best when the subject matter is interesting and engaging to that student. I have always tried to adapt my curriculum to the interests of my students. I first began tutoring reading and writing in 1996 and continue. I wanted to become an English teacher but couldn't finish college because my parents could not afford it. I love to read and also to read to others. Teaching has always been my passion. I would like to do it more.
I love to teach children of all ages, especially when they are eager to learn. I am always excited when I see the success children achieve. I have never met a student that couldn't learn. My experience as a teacher began in my Church, I taught for 3 years in one of our Sunday School classes. My students ranged in age from 2-11 years old. After graduation from the University of Washington I was unsure if Education was what I wanted to do. So I chose a different path, and found out just how much I loved to teach. I decided to take the certification exam for Reading and Elementary Education I passed the Reading exam and missed the Elem. Ed by 5 points. I decided to go into Adult education to see if it was for me. I began teaching communications at Bates in November of 2009, I now teach Interpersonal Communications and a Human Relations course.
