I have worked with teenagers, young adults and older students returning to college. I work especially well with students who have a lack of confidence about their academic or intellectual abilities. May students have told me years after taking my courses that they would not have made it to graduation without my help. I also served as a drama director at one of my colleges and produced 4 highly successful full-length plays. Ten years after one of the productions the entire cast planned a surprise reunion for me at a local restaurant. I could ask for greater 'applause' for my teaching efforts.

College Undergrad Looking to Tutor English Students

While I have never conducted a formal tutoring session, I have edited the work of my peers and more recently assisted my girlfriend's younger sister with the completion of her college essay. From my experience, I have found that I prefer to work one-on-one with the student whose work I am editing. That way, I am able to explain my revisions and help them understand my reasoning behind making certain edits. I'm not, by any means, a hard-nosed individual, but I'll certainly do my best to ensure that the student learns something.
Not only was English my favorite subject as well as the one I was most proficient in in high school, it eventually became my major in college. I majored in Journalism at The University of New Hampshire, and while I have not yet received my Bachelor's of Arts from the institution I am a mere handful of credits away from earning it (9, to be exact), an acco ... read more

As the oldest of five children I not only love children, but I have a life-time long experience with them. I have babysat for years in my spare time- I am great at communicating and connecting with children. The connection factor is what I believe to be most important. My tutoring style is relaxed yet at the same time driven towards helping the 'student' to understand the topic or idea at hand. It is your job to not only help them by assisting the student with information you already have, but to allow them to feel comfortable and confident enough to arrive at the answer along their own path.
My experience in the field of tutoring is personal. I do not have formal previous experience with a formal institution that provides me with students to tutor- instead- my love and passion for reading, writing and literature in general has driven me to tutor friends and family concerning this ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a younger teacher, and it is important to me to do two things that a lot of instructors sometimes feel are mutually exclusive; develop a personal bond with my students and maintain a set of expectations for academic achievement. I am a witty, empathetic, and goofy person in my private life, and letting students glimpse that has been crucial to my success in teaching. I make sure to provide positive feedback and I prefer to frame mistakes in a positive way, while praising effort, in order to help students feel comfortable taking risks. Lastly, tutoring has taught me that holding your students to high standards can help them to feel great about themselves when they achieve what they might have thought impossible without help.
My experiences during and after college have been crucial to realizing my skill and joy in tutoring and teaching. I was fortunate enough to attend a sm ... read more

I have degrees that require me to do a lot of reading and writing. My career has been composed of teaching, reading and writing, as well as literature, at the Universities of Vermont and Connecticut. The teaching included freshman through graduate students - all levels of writing, in short. Much of it took place during individual conferences.
So my teaching styles are varried. As a tutor, one on one, we would be engaged in a conversation. My part would be to discuss the sublect of concern to the student. The student would ask questions, and we would end the session with a forcast of the next.

A Little Bit About Me...

I personally can say that I have learned the most & can recall the most from those teachers that I consider my favorites. I believe it is because they knew how to inspire and motivate me to achieve what I thought I couldn’t or didn’t want to do. Those early experience is the inspiration behind the way I teach/tutor and write. I once heard it stated that ‘no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care’. I truly believe that you have to have a genuine interest in the individuals you are trying to inspire in order to make learning a possibility, especially in young children & adolescents. I also believe that in order to make a difference & be a positive influence; you really have to enjoy & have a passion for what you do

A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently working part time as a ski instructor with children. This has taught me to be patient with the development of my students. It is incredibly important to maintain an atmosphere where learning is fun. I am certified by Oxford seminars to teach english as a second language. During the classes we studied general techniques for teaching english, that can be used for native speakers as well. I am a firm believer that there are all different types of learners, and thus teaching styles should adapt to the individuals needs.
I specialized in poetry studying under one of the top T.S. Eliot scholars. As a literature major we studied a wide range of topics from early english to post colonial literature. This has given me a great appreciation of the english language. Having grown up abroad in Amsterdam and Switzerland has also made me enthusiastic about the barrier between conver ... read more

Learning is a team effort. I believe my experience as a Division I cross country runner has endowed me with a team mentality I use each time I tutor a student. Establishing a team setting reassures those I tutor that we will work together to achieve every goal we set. Because I have tutored students of all ages, I can easily identify what must be taught and how to teach it to meet a student's specific needs and learning style.

I used all learning styles. I taught and they wrote. We had group assignments and presentations. All students increased their English scores. They all succeeded in their learning. I loved teaching and made sure that they all had a wonderful learning experience. I worked hard to make sure everyone learned their curriculum. It would be a great joy to be part of a school system again.
When I did my first student teaching in the 4th grade I succeeded in teaching the children all subjects. I also taught one Spanish girl how to read English and learn her math. My second term of student teaching was in the 3rd grade. Again I succeeded in teaching all subjects to my students. All my students were involved in learning. My greatest year of teaching was at Saint Joseph School. I taught middle school English from 5th grade through 8th grade. All my students were very busy learni ... read more

I have been a one-on -one paraprofessional at the elementary school level, teaching all subjects. I have also been a substitute teacher for eight years in prek-eight grade taching all subjects. I enjoy teaching all ages. I have found the most satisfying experience in helping a student reach his/her potential and see their self-esteem grow immensely as their academic achievements grew. Every student is unique and deserves to have the best education possible. This sometimes means teaching differently to one student than to another. There is no cookie-cutter approach.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching all age groups. I especially enjoy teaching language arts because this is a fundamental subject that is such a necessity in life.
