Personally, I have seen (and experienced myself) the benefits of students learning underlying principles of math material via hands on, sequential learning processes. It is of the utmost importance that a student understands the separate components of a theory or process in order to comprehend the larger picture. Therefore, I believe rote learning seriously prohibits true understanding for many students.
