I have a calm, loving environment in my classroom. I expect the best from my students and they never let me down. I play classical music during their work time and allow them to work in partners, groups, and individually daily. I also hold what I call "workshops" for students who need that extra help with the lesson I just taught. It seems so much nicer than to negatively call the students back to my table that "don't get it!!". I am beginning my 14th year of teaching. I've tutored two kids in my neighborhood for 40 buck every two weeks. It was a marvelous experience because they were very respectful young boys...majority of the time. It was kind of hard for them to keep their focus so i drew a plan which was rewarding them with candy and toys, and of course since it was my idea I didn't charge extra. I believe all students can become successful readers with positive, engaging instruction. I am am a certified Reading Instruction Specialist and former fourth grade teacher. Most students rise 2-4 grade levels in under 50 hours of instruction using the Academic Associates Reading Program. The Academic Associates curriculum is a 13 lesson brain-based phonics curriculum. One of my favorite success stories is a student I'll call Mark. After completing only 7 lessons, Mark went from a 1.9 reading level to a 3.5 reading level. Because of his previous struggles in reading, the school he attended planned to retain him in the second grade. After only 2 months of instruction, the school called his mother to let her know that he would not be retained because of the remarkable improvement in his reading. Learning to read properly not only helped improve his grade, but prevented his being held back.
