When tutoring a student, I like to start with giving the student a few problems to see where their competency level lies. From there, I proceed like a teacher in a classroom would. I explain a problem while I am solving it step by step on a piece of paper. This allows the student to learn two separate ways-visually and orally. First I like to try to ask them where they are having trouble or watch them do some problems to see where they are having troubles. Where I find the problem I would show them the correct ways to approach a problem and prove it to them or use other methods to help them understand how the concepts work. I'm a good listener and very patient with students. I was also Tutoring throughout my time at Edgewood on a drop in basis with any students that came to the math department and could not reach a professor. I have a BS in Mathematics and doing math at all levels is fun for me.
I enjoy helping students work through tough problems by allowing them to make mistakes and then rework the problem a couple of times the correct way. I will then walk them through a couple of examples demonstrating how to properly obtain the correct answer. I will follow that up by asking them to do a problem without any direct instruction from me. I will watch them work on the problem to assure they are working on it properly. If any mistakes are made I will politely point them out as the individual is working. Finally, I will ask them to work on problems completely on their own and I will check their answers when they are done.
