My comments on tutoring Chinese: I'm a native English speaker, but I studied Chinese throughout college and have lived in China for two years, partly as a student and partly working as a translator in a food company. My Chinese (Mandarin) is very fluent, and I can read and write proficiently. (I'm more used to using simplified characters, but can recognize Traditional characters as well.)I'm qualified as a Chinese mentor with Lincoln Public Schools, though it hasn't worked out for me to work with students in Chinese yet.
I've been a Mentor with Lincoln Public Schools for over a year. Mentors function as one-on-one teachers for gifted students in an area of their strength. I've taught math to elementary school students (many of whom were in middle-school level math) and am also qualified as a Chinese mentor for all levels and a Social Studies mentor. I also work at the Kumon Math and Reading Center and primarily assist young students who are learning to read. In the past I have assisted Chinese students preparing for the SAT and TOEFL, and also tutored numerous subjects for high school students. I try to find out what a student is interested in and incorporate that.
