A Little Bit About Me...

My goal in teaching is to provide the student with the tools to discover and learn new concepts and to apply this knowledge to the learning process. I do not beleive in giving answers, but rather helping the student learn how to find the answers. I am very patient and will go over a concept until it is understood by the student. I enjoy children who are eager to learn, but try to instill a desire to acheive.
As an administrator of a school I oversaw the education of children from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. I have eight years experience teaching algebra I, five years teaching business math. I have eleven years experience teaching English grammar from third grade through twelfth grade. I have taught fourth grade for three years, fifth grade for three years and sixth grade for two years.

I believe that the best way for a student to learn is to explain the basics of which subject I am teaching, show a few examples, and then let them discover how to obtain the answers in their own way. It’s very satisfying when I see a student’s mental light click on and their eyes light up in understanding after they figure something out. Positive encouragement is very important too.
I have a BA in Creative Writing, which I have put to use not only in my writing but I am a proofreader to several other beginning author’s stories. I believe teaching is best learned though practical examples (especially math). because I used to say the same thing that I'm sure that kids today are saying. When am i ever going to use this in my daily life? Its important to let them see the applications from knowing calculus based formulas to predict market declines (algorithms), to basic math in in inventory work, to understanding complex words and their proper sentence usage so they can understand what rudimentary or neophyte means in a job interview. Also, its important to inspire. most of the children/ teens in a tutoring course have been discouraged due to the fact that they are not picking up on a subject as quickly as their peers. I enjoy teaching and assisting students to obtain a goal. I enjoy the change in attitude and increase in self confidence when "it finally clicks" and students realize they understand the subject matter at hand and CAN do it. I think everyone is capable of learning anything, the key is to figure out what style works for them. I believe, by currently being a student myself, I have a better understanding of the stresses and constraints on students. Although I have only been teaching in a classroom setting for the last two semesters, I have spent a great deal of time teaching friends and fellow students over the years.
