'Retired' Biologist and Experienced Math Tutor

I have been teaching molecular biology to students and technicians in the laboratory for the past 12 years. In college I taught the human anatomy laboratory and a special research section to other undergraduates. I also tutored fellow students in College Algebra. I am currently tutoring students in math to prepare them for the GED.
I believe my job as a tutor is to find a way to help every student learn. I tell all my students if they don't understand the material, then I have to find another way to explain it. I believe anyone can learn math and science when the teaching is tailored to the students learning style.I will take the time to find the best learning style for your student and assign useful homework assignments. When trying to reach youth (especially with school work they are not particularly excited about), I have found the best strategy is to first find out where they stand with the subject. This typically involves taking the first session to find out a little about the student, what excites and interests them, and what subjects they do or do not like and why. Then it is best to "test" them to see where they are on the subject they need help with. Once I have identified where they are as a student, I can use my knowledge of who they are to relate the subject matter to things they are interested in, thereby increasing the possibility for learning.
