I have been a distinguished Graphic Artist/Illustrator since 1981. A product of the North Carolina educational system, I was the recipient of Certificates of Art in 1981 & 1982, and the 1983 winner of the prestigious Art Pen Award. Having received my Associate in Applied Science Degree in Commercial Graphics from Randolph Community College in Asheboro, N.C., I moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1989. I love teaching and engaging with people of all ages. Everyone learns in a different way, and it is kind of exciting to see how people think and try to connect with them. I believe that it is possible for anyone to learn; some people just have to take a different approach to get to their objective. I love the entire learning and teaching process, and I am pretty fond of people as well!
I can be helpful in math up through Algebra II, and have extensive knowledge of counseling, religious studies, writing, and have used accounting a bit in bookkeeping. I could tutor social studies up through high school because I have found such a great overlap between religion and counseling and human services. My teaching style consists of working with students in the affective and objective domains to make learning personal and enjoyable. That is, I address the student’s confidence and capabilities by establishing rapport and assessing his/her skills level through specific tasks or assessments. In the initial sessions, I determine the student’s interests through simple five-minute inventories or “getting-to-know-you” activities. With regards to academics, the study time always includes explanation or review of the focus skill (lesson) or task; my demonstrating the skill by completing a related task; a shared activity wherein the student and I complete a similar activity together; and, finally, the student’s practice of the skill in an independent activity.
