I have been teaching in different areas and capacities for three years now. I started by teaching English to Korean students in Daegu, South Korea. Here I taught all different skill levels and ages. When I returned to the United States I began working at Sylvan Learning Center. I was responsible for running the center. Students learn to write by writing (and by reading). I have used a number of different text books but I find that students learn best when writing about something that matters to them. My approach to tutoring, then, would be to find out what a student truly cares about and start from there. In addition, I would begin by taking a diagnostic writing sample in order to see what mechanical issues seemed most important to address. I would never attempt to tutor a student with some kind of formulaic, standardized regimen of study but would work my hardest to tailor tutoring sessions to the individual needs of each student.

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating with honors from Grove City College, I took a position as a writer for a large nonprofit organization in Washington, DC. While working as a professional writer, I dedicated my free time to tutoring at a center for urban kids.
Learning must be fun, especially in a tutoring context. In my previous tutoring experiences, I always attempted to turn tasks into games or opportunities for creative expression.
