Phonics and help for dyslexic students

Hands-on, creative, active, using senses to keep children involved, especially those with ADHD. Trained in the Orton-Gillingham method to use explicit, sequential, systematic, and comprehensive phonics, especially for children or adults with dyslexia.
While homeschooling my boys, I invented new ways to teach them to read. These methods turned out to be helpful to many students. I've taught children how to read for about 5 years. I wrote a series of books to give teachers methods to teach phonics in creative ways, published through Creative Teaching Press. I've published mountains of curriculum. Formerly, I was the editor for the weekly education section for the "Denver Post." Now I am especially interested in helping children who have reading problems, particularly those who have or may have dyslexia.

A Little Bit About Me...

After high school I achieved a BS from George Peabody College for teacher, however did not teach for money until many years later after I received my MS. My work in clinical psychology has been mostly with children, the severely mentally ill, and abuse cases. My last full time position was teaching high school material in a one room school to students who were wards of the state. I taught anger management for the local courts for eight years. Now I teach parenting classes for divorcing couples for the Giles County court. I also occasionally teach a seminar for attorneys on body language.
As both a teacher and a counselor I have worked to develop a teaching style that is student focused. I love teaching and interacting with willing minds. Teaching "runs in the blood", where my mother is an excellent teacher in the Huntsville City School District, my father was a former teacher and all of my aunts and uncles functions or functioned in some teaching capacity. I believe that teaching should be made enjoyable and not laborious. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy pretented not to know the work myself which allows them to help me. It helps me to see what they already know and to see how much I need to help them know. I use this approach to boost selfesteem in students.
I'm currently working for Huntsville City Schools Extended Day Program. I've been working there for 3 years. In those 3 years, I also worked in the work study program, working at the Richard Showers Center's after school program. While, at the Showers Center, I was placed with an ADHD and Dyslexic student. My duties included, helping him find different ways to learn the material and I went through a series of repetitional exercises. I continued to tutor him for 1 year.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in interactive learning. Students learn best when they are in a safe environment, which I can provide. I have experience breaking down large assignments and helping students to accomplish one task at a time.
