Degreed English/Reading/Writing Tutor With A Personal Touch!

Hello! I earned my Bachelor of Arts in psychology (3.5 GPA) in 2012 and have been tutoring English; ESL; reading; writing; and more for 8 years. I began as a volunteer through my university's writing lab, per recommendation by a cherished professor. I have worked with children and adults from a variety of cultures (South Korean; Venezuelan; Mexican; Turkish), and I have enjoyed playing the role of "student" in my own regard. I love to learn about other traditions and practices. One of the most rewarding experiences for me as a tutor was when I worked with a South Korean family for 1 year. While teaching two school age boys, I was privileged to be introduced to a bevy of Asian foods; practices; and even the Korean language itself. This family became my own extended family, and vice versa. This was a very poignant, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me, and I gained a wealth of knowledge f ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have worked with elementary, high school, and college-aged students, providing instruction in subjects ranging from English to biology. I am comfortable teaching a group, but I also have ample experience working one-on-one with students. I believe that course material should engage students. I do not believe that rote memorization is practical in most real-world situations, and I prefer to provide instruction in a manner that makes learning interesting and fun. This typically results in students who retain information long after a test is over.
I attended Thomas More College on an academic scholarship and graduated with honors in the spring of 2011 with a BA in Environmental Science. Presently, I am pursuing a Master of Biology degree at the University of Cincinnati, where I hold a University Graduate Scholarship as well as a Yates Scholarship. Science is similar to math where it is important to practice problems. I mostly tutor Organic Chemistry, in which I prefer to help individuals work out extra practice problems (or those assigned by the teacher) to practice concepts. I have a similar approach in the other subjects I tutor. It is best in science to work out hard problems outside of class because then it reviews all concepts needed to answer these problems on a test. My students always do much better after a tutor session with me because of this. It is also a little more exciting than simply summarizing a teacher's lecture.

My approach to composition is simple; think, write, repeat. This means that I use a process-oriented method as students draft and re-draft based upon the new ideas and insights which are gained through the practice of writing. I also employ post-process pedagogy, encouraging student participation in the world around them. I want them to engage with the private and public spheres. My goal for my students is to think about how ideas are intertwined across the disciplines and how the critical thinking skills learned in one course can work with the theoretical skills they learn in another. When they leave me, I want them to be self-sufficient learners who can analyze, organize and teach others what they have learned.
I am currently teaching first-year composition as a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati. I have been teaching at UC for two academic years and will gradu ... read more
