Student-centered Tutor with lots of patience.

At this moment, I am a volunteer English/English as a Second Language Tutor at our community library. I tutor two elementary students in Reading and Writing two times a week. The younger student has a hard time focusing. I tried variety of things to help her. When we meet, I ask her first how was her day so I would know if she is tired or how long her attention span would be. After I try to ask her to read a small book that she picks. Then as she reads I try to assess her difficulty. I write down words she can’t read. When she is done, I ask her to write sentences or a story with the difficult words. Then she draws about it. I read the story back to her. I try to involve all her senses from visual to verbal in her learning process. The other student has a hard time in comprehension. I try to read the book with her and ask her questions about it. I get her excited. Most of the books she r ... read more

Specializing in SAT Preparation

I truly enjoy teaching and working with people; I am very personable, positive, and encouraging. I will also make the subject interesting and fun.
I am starting my own SAT prep company this fall (see achieveexcellencehawaii.com). I am currently the SAT prep teacher (and upper school science teacher) at American Renaissance Academy in Kapolei. I have been tutoring various subjects for over 10 years, have about 6 years of teaching experience (with a focus on math, science, and ESL), and have taught numerous SAT prep classes and tutored a handful of students in SAT prep for other companies. I have been blessed to help many students raise their total SAT scores 300-600 points. I have a Master's Degree in Divinity from Azusa Pacific University (CA) and Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

My comments on tutoring GED : I have instructed GED prep for over 10 years and feel competent helping others.

I have taught over 20 years in private & public schools in Hawaii & one summer in Michigan. My experience ranges from elementary to college level. I have also tutored SAT prep in English and math and instructed English As a Second Language for Hawaii Pacific University in their summer exchange programs with Asian countries. During the summers, I teach the Brown Reading Systems at private schools, most recently at I'olani. I have experience with both highly motivated and at-risk high school students, active military, and adults. During my years of teaching GED prep, I covered the four core subjects with focus on language arts and math.
I consider myself a facilitator of knowledge, encouraging my students to discover answers for themselves. To me, the process of acquiring knowledge is as important as the knowledge itself. With gentle prodding, building on what students alread ... read more

Do your science or math classes have you frustrated? These subjects can be complex, but I have over six years of experience turning them into manageable, even fun, topics. I use analogies, case studies, current events, and that student’s particular interests to keep subjects interesting. I tailor my lessons to the unique learning styles of each student. My students learn by gaining a true understanding of the subject and not by regurgitation of random facts – memorized information alone tends to be forgotten immediately after the test. In addition, my background in journalism has honed my ability to synthesize information and convey complex information in a straightforward manner.
Over the past six years, I have been a collegiate instructor, a private tutor, and a tutor for elementary, middle school, and high school students in science, math, reading comprehension, writing, a ... read more

Teaching is as much a process as learning. It can be carried out most effectively only when it's driven by self-motivation. I'm in teaching because I want to be. It brings me joy... gets me excited in the morning going to work. Such zest in easily reflected in the way I teach. My students feel my enthusiasm; they witness my taking a personal interest in their learning. In a dynamic cycle of influence, we fuel each other in our educational mission... be it thorny tests, understanding of concepts, or simply, having fun. More important than anything else, my ears, and heart are always open to them... they teach me how to teach.

When I meet with a new client I create a plan by finding out where they are having trouble with starting with the basics. I make sure each client is prepared with all the basic tools to succeed before moving on to a new section. It is important to have to basics mastered to avoid having problems in the future. I like to teach by example. I do this by creating a problem, showing the steps, and then changing the numbers or variables. This way the the student can remember the process rather than just the answer. I always give positive reinforcement for their hard work. I believe creating challenges and praising clients for their accomplishments helps them retain the material.

I believe that each child learns most effectively in a different way, which much be found to further consider a teaching style. Basically I love working with interested questioning minds. I try to inspire students to be self learners -becoming first inquisitive, and then solvers of their own inquiries. Massive amounts of work are required and it is best if the student of science is interested and inquisitive if all the material is to be grasped.

I believe that the best way to teach is by integrating the artistic with the rational and have even founded a non-profit organization that is dedicated to teaching sustainability and systems theory using a combined approach. I hope to provide students with examples of interconnectedness in order for them to be able to synthesize information presented during lectures and readings with other aspects of their lives.
