I will give your child my best effort

I have always endeavored to excel academically and so sought after and received a top-level education at Duke University. Having a love of language and having a desire to be able to teach at all levels, I obtained an MA in English from the UNC-G. I have had 43 years of teaching and tutoring at all levels, elementary through college. I have taught high school English, college English, SAT Prep, and GRE Prep---both the verbal and the math (I scored almost 800 on the math section). I was responsible for setting up a city-wide tutor-training program for children with learning disabilities, wrote the curriculum, interviewed and selected the tutors and staff, and served as the administrator and supervisor.
My primary aim in tutoring students is to assess exactly where they are academically, including reading level and math skills. Then I teach to their exact level. I help them to set up ... read more

I attempt to increase student self-esteem in my teaching style, promoting trust through clear communication. Students differ across cultural, financial and personality traits. Accepting and respecting these differences is key to providing each child with the best possible education. I’ve learned to develop respect and trust through clear communication of expectations, establishment of boundaries, positive reinforcement and encouraging students to provide feedback. I also work to increase student self-esteem and sense of achievement. As a martial arts instructor, I’ve developed the skills to ensure that even the meekest child can become a leader. I achieve this progress through a disciplined environment and through the use of formal recognition, which increases each student’s sense of accomplishment.
I have over 15 years experience instructing martial arts to children as young as ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating college, I worked as a structural engineer. As my experience grew, so did my responsibilities. I began getting younger interns in college and having to teach them theories and practices of engineering. The mathematics behind these theories involved, Algebra, Calculus, Geometry, and various other mathematics that I recently became certified in with the Florida Department of Education. About 2 years ago, a friend of mine asked me to tutor his son for the S.A.T.'s, his scores improved by about 100 points in the mathematics. Since then I have been tutoring through recommendations in College Algebra, Statistics, Pre calculus, and various other students in general mathematics.
I really enjoy teaching and working with all with students in a one on one environment.. It's very fulfilling to see a student improve, but it takes practice, patience and hard work from the both t ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

It is such a joy to see a child learn a new concept. I enjoyed teaching. I tried to emphasize that no one can take away an education from you in hopes to eager the children to learning every aspect of the subject at hand. My biggest goal was to get the children a need or want to learn all they could learn. I substituted every aspect of children from special needs to A+ students. Every child got the same respect in my teaching, because we all are individuals. It did not matter if that child was handicapped or not because she or he was their own individual. I tried to let each child's individuality come out for that child to be the person she or he wanted to be.
I have 46 credited hours in educating children. I substituted Kindergarten through the sixth grades for Jefferson County, Birmingham City, and Vestavia Hills School Districts for the past six years. Children are ... read more

As I indicated, I have a B.A.in Philosophy and later studies in Art. Later, in 1975, I decided to return to obtain a DMD at BU. After that I joined the Army and served as an Army dentist. Due to events in my life following my brief sojourn in the Army, I traveled abroad to India and Asia. Upon returning, I continued to study, but this time in more spiritual matters. I currently live with my daughter and 3 grandchildren and we have a small family registered daycare. I also participate with the children. However, I do spend a few hours a day writing and I am also a webmaster.

My goal is to provide the best education possible. I would use all the learning styles while tutoring a person to evaluate and develop the learning style which best fits the individual. I believe anyone can learn and have fun doing so, it is the teacher or his style or any combination which hinders the student.
I am a college graduate with degrees in finance and real estate. Through the years I have educated myself through higher learning in all areas of academics. Years ago I performed all the requirements needed to graduate a four year college, one of which is interaction with other students in a study group atmosphere and either learning or teaching each other. I have always loved learning and teaching people which I believe qualifies me to tutor young people.

My teaching style definitely has a tiered structure. Because children are naturally curious and always ready to play, the first thing I do is try to break the topic down into an everyday application. I use manipulatives whenever possible to introduce the topic and allow students to draw conclusions from these activities. Once we have created a solid base to build upon, we then move to more abstract applications. Building students' confidence in their own thinking is a key to further growth. My goal is for my students to not only meet learning objectives, but to do so in such a way that it is fun!
In my ten years of teaching I have consistently worked to improve my level of instruction through inservice and available learning resources. The strategies I have implemented in my classroom have been highly successful. I have had the opportunity over the last two years to tweak man ... read more
