My comments on tutoring Statistics : PhD in Statistics. Teaching Statistics, Biostatistics and SAS at University of Louisville

My student's comments: Bakee’s teaching style makes many of the statistical methods much more palatable and easier to understand. The best part of the course was the instructor’s willingness to reach out to students outside of class. He made it easy to stay on track when there was any confusion. The pace was very good. The instructor graded fairly, gave homework that was based on what we learned recently in class and was fair based on what had been taught. I liked that the professor provided examples and explained them step by step and was fair and open about his expectations of what was expected of the class given the background majors of the students. I feel this course has prepared me very well for the information I will be analyzing during my research project. I really appreciate Bakkee's thoroughness and I think he was a wonderful teacher. Bakee was very fair in his expec ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Many people find math, statistics, computers, and/or SPSS to be intimidating or scary. I would help the student overcome this fear. I have been using SPSS for about 25 years. I feel I am pretty comfortable using it. SPSS, I feel, is best taught practicing it's use on the computer and not so much read out of a book. SPSS is a programming language and I mainly use syntax to run it but can also use it via pull-down menus. I will work with the student and teach them either or both ways to learn SPSS.

Graduating from Northwestern University, I know what it takes to succeed in the classroom. I received two degrees in math and economics, giving me a strong foundation in math and science. As a first generation immigrant, I have sharply experienced just how important proper communication skills are. Language, spoken and written are one of the most important parts of building those skills for young people, for success in both carreer and social life. I strongly believe that my own experience with constant learning and improving my language abilities helps me in better understanding of the learning process of others. Multiple personality assesments as well as my self-evaluation state me as a leader type indiavidual, competitive, influential, however also supportive and attentive as well. As a non paid experience I have been the helping hand for my friends struggling with their paper, proof reading and restructuring their writting during both highschool and college. Great Question. I have been in classes where I found learning a challenge. This is what makes me unique as a teacher. I build a relationship with the student. I do my best to not only explain the material, but how they can possibly use it in the future. I also have the best patience. I will go over something over and over again, searching in my own mind for a different to present the material so it sticks.
I have always been a good teacher. I scored very well on the SAT exams, and I have extensive tutoring experience. I scored in the upper 10 percentile on the Mathmatics portion of the SATs. I also have been studying non stop for the CPA exam. I would love to pass on knowledge to someone else. Tutoring is rewarding.

I enjoy working with all age groups and am able to interact very effectively with students from diverse backgrounds. Although as teacher/tutor/trainer I am keen to share the knowledge I have with students, I believe in challenging my students and encouraging them to not be afraid to learn through making mistakes. I also believe students learn in various ways, some are visual learners etc… while some are not; therefore my teaching style involves finding out what kind of learner the student is and adjusting my teaching style to adapt to his/her style of learning.

Simply put my teaching style has always been to make the student comfortable with statistics. I find many students are petrified of the thought of having to understand what all those Greek symbols mean. The way I teach is to bring statistics into the student’s world. I do this by showing how statistics are used in the real world. The end result of my classes has always been that the students leaving the class have an understanding of what statistics can do for them. They may not all go on to be PhDs in the field but each one of the will take a closer look at the data that crosses their work station each day.

With experience and training in psychology and evaluation, I bring a unique approach to working with each child as an individual, quickly assessing learning style, making the most of strengths while coaxing the gradual improvement of what is more challenging. One thing I've learned is that all of us love doing what we are good at and success breeds more success so working with that success, tapping into your child's perception of self as learning, productive, and accomplishing whatever goals they set for themselves. Success breeds success and a good teacher creates an environment that begins at a nexus of challenge sufficient to excite and entertain while also possible. I believe that positive reinforcement is effective and discouragement can be avoided.

I convey to each student a never give up attitude and show confidence in their ability to understand the material. Each problem will be explained to the student and I will encourage every student to ask questions. After the student gains confidence in working problems together then I will have the student work a similar problem by themselves to confirm their level of understanding. After the student works the problem I will go over it and correct any mistakes in their work .
I have an engineering background with a BS and Masters degree in Electrical Engineering. An engineering degree requires a significant background in math and science.
