A Little Bit About Me...

I still subscribe to some fundamental education axioms. Paramount to successful teaching are: - Enthusiasm for and knowledge of the subject. - Awareness of learners' needs and abilities. - Appropriate and effective evaluation of delivery and learning.
My high school education was comprised of "alternative" education and a summer semester at Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Between 1983 and 1989, as a long-term substitute teacher for the ROP (in CA), I taught Computer Sciences (which included Elementary Math and Algebra)at Anderson Valley High School in Boonville CA. As a full-time teacher, I taught Culinary Arts for the ROP for four years at the Fort Bragg High School, Fort Bragg, CA. I tutored students off-hours on an ongoing basis during my tenure as a teacher. For the purpose of this application, I am very interested in tutoring learners in English. I excelled in En ... read more

With a BA in Liberal studies my excellent writing skills complimented the thesis I wrote as a Masters of Science in Education student, and I grew as a teacher of reading when I researched strategies that would increase the academic success of a struggling first grade student learning to read. I have experience as a reading tutor for one year in a public elementary school, 16 years as a tutor, four years as a K-12 teacher in private and public schools. While earning my secondary English credential I taught theater arts and English at the high school level and later completed student teaching as a high school special education teacher. From these experiences I have increase my knowledge of subject areas such as literature & math.

A Little Bit About Me...

I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I taught and was a leader and innovator at Cropper Alternative School for the next five years, until I decided to move to this part of the country after a recent divorce. I have been tutoring here since.
Everyone has style of teaching that is unique. Mine is at first appearance very laid back, but on closer inspection is very powerful and extremely effective in the long run. My strategy as ... read more

I enjoy tutoring because I find it rewarding to build relationships with students and observe their progress. I recognize that it is crucial to build rapport with students in order to gain their trust and respect, and as a result, I try to discover my students’ goals and interests. Once a student realizes that I genuinely care about her success, she is more likely to work hard and obey my instructions. In addition, I am a patient individual, which is a useful quality to have when one is having difficulty getting a student to comprehend a particular concept. Furthermore, I make sure to praise my students for their hard work because I know that low confidence can inhibit successful learning.
I graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine with a BA in history and minors in biology and psychology. Earning a history degree required me to write several essays, including ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Working with children has always been somewhat natural to me, probably due to the fact I spent so many of my summers teaching, playing, and caring for them. I was a camp counselor for five summers and my primary duty was the classroom. I was in charge of arts and crafts and teaching lessons/themes of the week. The children I worked with were ages three through eight, and two of the children were autistic. Constructive criticism and co-operative learning learning are very important to me. I feel that visual and kinesthetic teaching methods are the most successful. I am very patient and laid back, but at the same time I will not let any one fall behind and I am determined to find success in every student.
There is nothing more I want to do with my life than care for others, which gives me a certain drive to help any and all individuals succeed in any way that I can. Assisting student ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I discovered my gift for teaching as an undergraduate and it has been my life's work. My approach is to guide students in making their discoveries rather than making them remember what I discovered and told them about. Making their own discoveries, guided by me, they feel better about themselves as learners, bring more of themselves to the learning process, and develop greater confidence and competence. You can read more about my approach on my blog: http://masterylearningsystems.wordpress.com/
My most recent department chair, Dr. Marie Jureit called me the best teacher on campus. As Director of the Freshman Program, I was responsible for designing and implementing programs in developing reading and writing proficiency, ... read more

My teaching style is that I determine how best the student learns through observation and direct incouragement, instilling confidence for them to break through all barriers. Making learning fun is always more enjoyable for both students and tutors! I would develop a great rapport with my student(s) and create incentives to stretch the mind and promote creativity. I gain much satisfaction by contributing to the success of others!
