I had excelled in calculus during my freshman year of college, and I was recommended by my teachers to become a supplemental instruction (SI) tutor. I tutored students in calculus for the remaining 3 years of my undergraduate studies with SI. I was supported through a teaching assistantship (TA) during my graduate studies where I taught introductory geology lab. TAs were given a general guideline of what to teach, but not necessarily materials to use. I developed course and testing materials that I and other incoming TAs used as well. What I have learned working with students is that many do not learn in the same manner. I beleive in what is called top process learning. Given the student a concept and allowing them to explore the possibilities of how one arrives at such a concept has allowed deeper critical thinking and strategic planning. However, this method is not predominately taught in Georgia education system. I have found this method to be very effective. The other method is patience. Students who strugge with their academic learning usually are having other areas of difficulty which may be social learning. Having clinical training allows me to make a more accurate assessment.
