A Little Bit About Me...

Having attended higher learning institutions for over 6 years, my drive for more education is apparent. Throughout my experiences, not only have I been tutored, but have tutored my peers in mostly math and sciences. I have developed my speaking and writing abilities through my own employment experiences and feel that I have what it takes to teach and train individuals manual labor skills as well as mathmatical skills and abstract thinking and problem solving skills to help them understand concepts and apply them to a task.
I believe that people learn in different fashions. For example, I feel that some concepts may be better explained with tangible objects while other concepts are learned better when questioned and discussed. By exploring the different ways of learning we can find what works best for that individual and use that method as a tool for their understanding. I feel, in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I like to teach ESL from the Communicative Competence ideal. Integrating reading writing speaking listening into thematic units. Learning a new language requires hands on experience. If for example we are doing a unit on weather then my students may role play a weather man. Gather vocabulary from a newspaper. Count change as if they were really buying something. Read and write from a reporters perspective, or even travel to a museum with a reoprt and description of things they have seen using adjective and adverbs for color and detail. I also believe reading should be taught at the appropriate reading level for comprehensions sake. If a reader is below the 98% error level, they will not succeed. Frye's reading level test determines the reading level. Vocabulary is very unique in that there are many fun activities to spur children into acquiring a huge vocabulary. Word walls are ... read more

With a BA in Politics, Philosophy, & Economics (w/Literature Concentration), I am able to help students move beyond a simple grammatical appreciation of the English Language: from understanding allusions to developing their own voice. I am comfortable writing and teaching in a variety of styles (research papers, creative writing, journalism, poetry), and have extensive copy-editing experience (projects include a book, magazine & newspaper articles, published papers, and college composition essays). I have also provided feedback/tutored an ESL student for a full school year, and am at home in any academic environment (three-plus years as a Teaching Assistant).

My teaching style is, for the most part, non-directive. I think it is important to try to have students answer their own questions. When this does not work, I do not just tell the student what goes where or why this doesn't work, I give reasons and have them tell me these same reasons the next time we come across something that doesn't work.
At SCSU, I work as a writing consultant at the Writing Center on campus. With students, I help to make them better writers by helping answer questions, presenting questions, working through the brainstorming and paper-writing process, and helping with formatting. As well, I have helped to coordinate our second satellite location, which entails working with people on their schedules, managing conflicts of schedule, and serving as a head of the second location. I am also fluent in Spanish and feel comfortable tutoring high school and college leve ... read more

Upon returning to the United States I began working on my master's degree in TESL and I've also had the opportunity to teach 3 credit bearing college courses from 2009 to current. I love teaching because I truly enjoy seeing the light come on when a student gets it. I have had some excellent teachers in my life and have used their techniques to help students I tutor. I understand there is not one specific way to teach a subject and the key is asking questions to find out what will help a particular student. I find it helpful to use processes students are familiar with and expand upon that knowledge. I am a firm believer in showing why something works the way it does, not just showing the solution. This process, along with patience and understanding, has been useful my past experience and I believe it will be in the future as well.
I began my college career in the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota. During my five semesters in the program I was able to study calculus and physics. I am familiar with high school level physics and mathematics ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a substitute teacher for over a year. I have subbed for every grade level and subject. A significant amount of my sub jobs have been math related. I am working on my Master's Degree at The College of Saint Scholastica, in Education. I also have had numerous classroom field experiences through the college, where I have been observed by other teachers and professors. During these experiences, every cooperating teacher has let me use them as a reference. From substitute teaching to my prior career as a correctional officer, I have a tremendous amount of experience turning a bad situation into a good one. In a tutoring environment, I have a lot to offer the student(s).
My teaching philosophy is simple; I believe in providing a safe and positive atmosphere for students to learn. In creating this positive atmosphere I motivate my students by showing them that they can in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, MN in 1987. I have been teaching Elementary Education in the ROCORI School District located in Cold Spring, MN for 22 years. I tutor students independently and teach Summer School/Camp in the ROCORI School District.
I believe that every child can learn and has the right to a solid education. I believe students learn best when they are a part of the educational process and feel safe while learning. Children should be encouraged to voice their opinions in a democratic and respectful manner. However, they should be taught to uphold their teachers, and other adults, with the utmost respect. I feel teachers should be knowledgeable, flexible, and compassionate. Teachers must be able to adapt to the everyday changes in life to create a smooth transition for their students. A teacher's compassion can only improve their tea ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have a great desire to pass the knowledge I was so fortunate to receive from my teachers and mentors, to others so that they may learn how to make better decisions in their own lives. I believe the role of a teacher (tutor) is to motivate students to want to learn. From my own experience I believe students learn the best when they are motivated to learn by seeing the value and importance of the information presented to them. Everyone does not learn the same way, so I incorporate various learning styles until the student finally understands the concept being taught, which includes real world situations, visual, tactile and auditory methods in my teaching. I want others to have the information I was so fortunate to recieve from teachers who have made a difference in my life.

As a mother of two, I understand not only the importance of learning to read but the process involved. Each child has a different learning style and speed, and as a tutor it is important to be agile - teaching to individual needs. I believe in allowing children to learn through discovery, while providing guidance and correction as needed. There is opportunity in the written word, and this is something every child should and can experience.
As a Notre Dame graduate, I have always valued education. Having graduated with two degrees in computer science and psychology, I entered the workforce immediately following college and recently took a leave of absence to spend some time with my children. They have both entered elementary school, which is affording me the opportunity to seek part-time work outside of the home. Professionally speaking I have been responsible for numerous int ... read more
