Study Skills is one of my top subjects!

Over 13 years of working with students that were not scholars initially. After learning skills to improve their educational/learning experience, they became more scholarly, and enjoyed learning. This is key. They just need to change their perspective, and learn how to make "learning" enjoyable, like it was in kindergarden.
My teaching style is interactive, many of my former students would characterize it as "coaching". I always empower the student to find their way and to have them become "pros" in the learning process. I do not do the work for them, but I show them how they can make their tasks and finishing them more efficient. I am a firm believer in the philosophy that edication is not preparation for life, it is life itself. Experience is key.

My comments on tutoring Study Skills : I am NYS certified in Literacy (grades 5-12) and English (grades 7-12), although I have several years of experience with children as young as Kindergarten.

Holding active NYS certifications in both English and Literacy has had a tremendous impact on the way I teach. I find myself much better able to engage struggling students. Quite often, particularly when it comes to reading, it is the lack of basic comprehension skills that prevent students from being able to fully engage with a text and to perform critical thinking tasks. Every person has the ability to learn! I have found the key is to establish a rapport with each student, and then find the method that works best for them. Some students learn better by hearing the concept. It is helpful for them to first have a conversation about what the subject matter is, and how it is used, and then proceed to the actual lessons. Other students excel when they see the concept first, and learn best through visual aids.
