My comments on tutoring Journalism : As a high school English teacher I also served as newspaper and yearbook advisor. I also worked as a freelance writer for a small town newspaper.

I have been a dynamic, successful elementary, middle and high school teacher as well as college instructor of Art, English, French and History for many years. I also taught in a two way language immersion school ( English and Spanish) for six years so I can teach Beginning and Intermediate levels of Spanish. While teaching, I have always taken courses in the best practices of teaching as well as courses in subject matter content. I have tutored people of all ages, learning styles and needs in a range of subject matter, including testing; I ascertain how each student learns best to develop the most fitting, effective teaching strategies for them. I am considered a Master teacher as I train other teachers about best practices and have also been recognized as "Teacher of the Year.”
I believe learning should always be engaging and meaningful. It is critical to address individual studen ... read more

My comments on tutoring Journalism : My Bachelors has a focus on broadcast journalism, but I also spent a few semesters on the college newspaper and I have a lot of experience with the hard and soft skills of journalism

I work best one-on-one or in small groups, I can adjust my style to what a person needs after speaking with them for a while and understanding how they learn. I've found the best way to teach someone a new way of looking at something is to understand how they currently perceive it.
I have worked in art and graphic design professionally for the past 6 years, however I have been freelancing and creating art for myself since 1998. I previously worked for the Hayward Area Historical Society, which included assisting in design for exhibits as well as some teaching to visiting school groups. I have also been asked to teach small groups of children about art, or help with general homework on numerous occasions.

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have a Journalism Degree from Iowa State University. I like to find the lead (most newsworthy point) to begin the story, make it clear and concise, and make it as complete and unbiased as possible.

I have a B.S. in Technical Journalism from Iowa State University. I worked on a sales magazine upon graduating until I was drafted into the armed forces, spending four years as a Navy Electronics Technician. On the G.I. Bill I did Television Production coursework at College of San Mateo and entered the Broadcast TV Graduate Program at San Francisco State. I did not complete my Master's degree, but my training and contacts made there led to a 35-year career in television and video editing.
Very informal and conversational. I like to laugh and joke as well as understand things that are challenging, to both pupil and teacher. Repetition with interesting variation, coming at a problem from different angles solidifies concepts and ideas in our heads.

A Little Bit About Me...

Many of my previous jobs have surrounded helping others. Whether that was through tutoring and teaching or customer service. Growing up I also tutored my younger sister and my cousin who has a learning disability. I have always been passionate about helping others, especially through education. Currently, I am pursuing a major in Sociology at the University of California Berkeley in hopes of becoming a teacher for K-12 students and eventually a college professor.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have not worked as an instructor in a school but all my life I have helped and tutored children in the community. I taught English to young monks in the Sakya Monastery in Nepal and also tutored young Tibetans new to English. I am patient, I have great imagination and I like witnessing children discover they too can tell stories.
Writing and reading has always been a constant in my life. I've worked as a writer for two magazines (in India) and have helped edit many papers and articles for non-profit organizations. For the past ten years I have worked for a non-profit organization as Staff Writer and Programs Officer and I had to use my writing skills to generate reports, proposals etc. While working full-time I was able to write two books of poetry (published by Apogee Press in Berkeley, CA) and I have just finished a non-fiction book. I enjoy helping young children disco ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

What makes me a successful mentor is my ability to relate to people and find a common ground upon which to build a relationship. I believe strongly in establishing a relationship with all students because this fosters encouragement and confidence, which undoubtedly begins to show in their work. At almost all of my initial meetings, students want to schedule their next meeting with me immediately. I see this as a testament to my tutoring style. I believe that the more a student trusts you, the more comfortable the student will be to take risks and try harder because he or she is no longer afraid to fail. This transitions into the student learning in an encouraging environment, which in turn produces successful work.

More About This Tutor...

Students learn best when they feel vested in the process of learning and excited about the journey; it is always my goal to convey my passion for the learning experience and my partnership with the student in that process. I am a firm believer in active learning and thus avoid rote memorization exercises and merely showing students how to do something. I help them to wrestle with the materials, to look at concepts from every possible angle, and to learn the importance of synthesizing information and determining what is wheat and what is chaff. I am patient and friendly with my students, but my focus is always on preparing them as learners.
As a teacher and tutor for over 27 years, I have had the pleasure of helping students explore their potential, find their passion, and excel in their learning experiences. I have been the Editor-in-Chief of several journals, and have written more ... read more

I would describe my teaching style in terms of the activity, belaying. Slack is given to the rope at times so that the climber may advance, or traverse, the face of the mountain. When the climber feels tired, or incapable, the rope needs tightening so the climber stays secure. If the climber falls from the face of the mountain the taught rope will prevent injury or possible demise. I tend to give my students slack when I feel they are advancing in terms of curriculum, yet once I notice their tendency to rest, or falter, I tighten my teaching approach by using more straightforward methods so that they are not confused, or do not wear themselves out with struggle. This is all so they reach the top of whatever mountain they choose to conquer.

I approach instruction from the view that “teach[ing] a man to fish, will feed him for a lifetime”. I am committed to building on what my students bring with them, using this as a fulcrum on which to hinge their learning. This approach succeeds in helping students understand that they are capable of and even responsible for teaching themselves?–?a skill I see as a necessity in life, especially once a student can no longer expect formal instruction. In addition to my own experiences with learning several languages, I have benefited from coursework in Behavioral Psychology, which has taught me to create positive classroom atmosphere. My students note my enthusiasm for language and express appreciation for my linguistic explanations.

As a student at Sonoma State University I spent a semester being a teachers assistant and then was hired in the outreach office. For three years I worked as a college rep for the university. I went around and spoke to students at high schools and attended college fairs at both high schools and community college. When schools came to visit the university I assisted with giving them a tour of the campus as well as an admissiona and records presentation. I am very familar with the CSU system as a whole.
My teaching style is to find how the students connect to the material and tie that into the material so that the student finds ways to remember the information in their own way. I also like to find fun ways to present the information so that it is not all lecturing but interaction between me and the student. I feel and believe that if you can teach the material to someone else than you ... read more
