My comments on tutoring Journalism : As a high school English teacher I also served as newspaper and yearbook advisor. I also worked as a freelance writer for a small town newspaper.

I have been a dynamic, successful elementary, middle and high school teacher as well as college instructor of Art, English, French and History for many years. My comments on tutoring Journalism : My Bachelors has a focus on broadcast journalism, but I also spent a few semesters on the college newspaper and I have a lot of experience with the hard and soft skills of journalism

I work best one-on-one or in small groups, I can adjust my style to what a person needs after speaking with them for a while and understanding how they learn. I've found the best way to teach someone a new way of looking at something is to understand how they currently perceive it.
I have worked in art and graphic design professionally for the past 6 years, however I have been freelancing and creating art for myself since 1998. I previously worked for the Hayward Area Historical Society, which included assisting in design for exhibits as well as some teaching to visiting school groups. I have also been asked to teach small groups of children about art, or help with general homework on numerous occasions.

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have a Journalism Degree from Iowa State University. I like to find the lead (most newsworthy point) to begin the story, make it clear and concise, and make it as complete and unbiased as possible.

I have a B.S. in Technical Journalism from Iowa State University. I worked on a sales magazine upon graduating until I was drafted into the armed forces, spending four years as a Navy Electronics Technician. On the G.I. Bill I did Television Production coursework at College of San Mateo and entered the Broadcast TV Graduate Program at San Francisco State. I did not complete my Master's degree, but my training and contacts made there led to a 35-year career in television and video editing.
Very informal and conversational. I like to laugh and joke as well as understand things that are challenging, to both pupil and teacher. Repetition with interesting variation, coming at a problem from different angles solidifies concepts and ideas in our heads.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have not worked as an instructor in a school but all my life I have helped and tutored children in the community. I taught English to young monks in the Sakya Monastery in Nepal and also tutored young Tibetans new to English. I am patient, I have great imagination and I like witnessing children discover they too can tell stories.

I would describe my teaching style in terms of the activity, belaying. Slack is given to the rope at times so that the climber may advance, or traverse, the face of the mountain. When the climber feels tired, or incapable, the rope needs tightening so the climber stays secure. If the climber falls from the face of the mountain the taught rope will prevent injury or possible demise. I tend to give my students slack when I feel they are advancing in terms of curriculum, yet once I notice their tendency to rest, or falter, I tighten my teaching approach by using more straightforward methods so that they are not confused, or do not wear themselves out with struggle. I went around and spoke to students at high schools and attended college fairs at both high schools and community college.
