In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. Everybody thinks differently, so the key is to discuss and explore the topic with a student until you see that they've experienced that "aha" moment. Education has been a major focus of my life since I was in middle school and decided I wanted to be a teacher. A Little Bit About Me...

I strongly believe that an education that leads with concepts instead of rote is the surest route to lifelong success. This is certainly the method that worked for me, and I find that, without the conceptual grounding, a student will not get as much out of necessary practice exercises. Thus, when I am working with a student on a subject, I tend to approach the concept foremost, creatively using a wide range of examples and descriptions to elucidate it. This is the best use of my time with a student, instead of just correcting their exercises.
