Teaching style depends on the subject, the type of material, and the student’s level and ability. The goal is to inspire a student to learn the study skills necessary to excel on their own. In a tutoring situation there is usually the immediate need (to pass a test) and the long term need to be able to succeed on their own. I try to balance these two goals but the guidance of the parents is most critical. I use a combination of repetition, memorization, quizzing, recitation, and problem solving to challenge a student’s thought process so that they may grasp the material. Although I have been self employed for the last 6 years, I went back to school last year to add Science and Math for middle school to my certification. I passed the Praxis for both of those subjects spring of 2010. I was not able to get a full time teaching position this year. I went back to working for myself but would love to tutor.
