Reading Comprehension is one of my top subjects! Prescribed reading strategies are used for a reason, but when those strategies do not take into account the learning profiles of the student using these strategies, then it will leave both the teacher and student feel disconnected and frustrated. For students with executive function or cognitive deficits, challenges with reading comprehension and expressive and receptive language skills, it is key for any educator to assess student comprehension and understand where the disconnect is. Many students benefit from chunking (reading short passages and asking questions) rather than tackling 20 pages in a book without engaging in "during reading" strategies (taking notes; asking questions; highlighting vocabulary words they do not understand; putting questions marks next to sentences that are confusing; etc.). I have over 15 years experience working with students whose greatest challenge was reading comprehension, and once we break down larger pieces of text into smaller, more manageable pieces, students start to build confidence and resilience and think more about "their thinking," which are the building blocks to becoming proficient readers and learners.

Ever since I was in Honors English in high school back in the seventies (yes, I am a "well seasoned" teacher versus "an old teacher"), I knew that I wanted to dedicate my college years to taking every writing and literature class I could get my hands on. Once my composition was chosen as the "model essay" in my English Comp 101 class at Adelphi University, and was read by students for many years after I graduated, I knew that I meant to be a teacher and share my love for literature, writing, and "coloring outside the lines," inspiring students to be reflective, thoughtful and creative readers, writers, thinkers, and speakers. I have over 15 years experience teaching students in grades 5-12 and my greatest asset is teaching students with very diverse skill sets and cognitive abilities.
My teaching style is based on student-centered, social-emotional learning, where my core values ar ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I fundamentally believe anyone can learn. If a student isn’t grasping a concept, it just means I have to change my style of teaching. So what is my teaching style…anything that helps a student achieve his or her potential. But the one thing I teach all my students is how to find their learning style. Once you know how you retain information you can do anything.
How do I summarize teaching in my life? I guess the best way to explain my teaching experience is to tell you a story. As a young girl I wanted to be a teacher. Because of my love of learning I taught all my siblings how to read. I know it is pretty funny but it is a true story. That led to my doing teaching seminars, which led to consulting, which led to training, which led to my working with individuals as a life coach. I have been a CEO, Vice President, Consultant, Senior Broker, Artist, Photographer, Glass Blowe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am aware of different ways of teaching methods. I like to get to know the student so I can engage his/her mind.I prefer the hands-on method and work from the child's work. I like to exam the child's work to address his/ her need. I found that Spectrum series helpful & websites to help the child's progress.

My approach to teaching relies heavily on the use of modeling. Modeling is a powerful tool in the development of not only writing and language skills, but also in exposing my students to a framework which will allow them to hone their own thought processes and work habits. Incorporating a wide variety of vocabulary-building activities into daily lessons strengthens my students' understanding of the subject area and provides a familiarity with language that will aid them in the ability to express themselves in a much more effective manner.
My teaching experience includes a wide variety of situations. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with children in grades kindergarten, one, two, three and four in a number of educational models, including multi-age groupings, departmentalized models and the traditional classroom. In addition to my work with younger stude ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a Senior Computer Science major at Siena college; my programming experience covers a range of languages, although my strongest is Java. I am currently certified by CompTIA as an IT Technician (A+ Certification), and have built 5 personal desktops over the years for clients. While programming is my main focus in school, I have learned a variety of techniques that bolster that skill, such as Artificial Intelligence design process, and Networking strategies.
My experience teaching started when I worked for Northlands Job Corps Academy. The students that I helped usually came to me not for their classwork, but because they held an interest in learned how their computers and personal devices worked. I feel that most learning comes from performing an activity rather than being lectured, so I prefer to give students a chance to perform the work after I show them a few basics (sup ... read more

I base my teaching on the pholosophy of Eli Siegal: "Aesthetic Realism". It states that "All beauty is a making one of opposites, and a making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves" Thus, I relate the subject matter in hand to students' personal lives. For example, if we are learning Le Chartelier's Princlple, which concerns the response of a chemical reaction to stress, I have my students discuss the types of stress they experience, and their responses. We compare this to the beautifully precise and appropriate reaction in Chemistry, where the response is never inapproriate, insufficent or in excess. This method has also taught me that I have much to learn from my students and their life experiences. .

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught many different students from all types of backgrounds, from gifted to learning disabled. The reason I have success with these students is because I make learning fun and relevant. I develop creative tools that are of interest to that particular student, while cultivating a great deal of empathy. This is based on getting to know the family the child is a member of. By understanding the lifestyle, demographics and cultural nuances, I can determine any problems that may deter from learning, and any strengths which can be built upon. My goal is to create an individual program that allows the learner to achieve their own personal best without the pressure of group age standards.

A Little Bit About Me...

I very much enjoy teaching both children and young adults. It gives me great satisfaction in helping others achieve a higher level of knowledge and skills. In addition, I feel that tutoring is a two-way street, whereby both the student learns material from the tutor, while at the same time the tutor learns how to better present the material in a way that is conducive for the student's learning. As such I strive to create a teaching environment that is both welcoming, yet challenging. Lastly, when it comes to learning and teaching, I believe in perseverance. Not every student has the ability to comprehend and retain everything all at once. Therefore as a tutor I would strive to instill this quality in my students.
