I have a deep passion for the sciences so my bachelor’s degree in biology was a natural fit. I discovered while working in a graduate program that I also love to teach. I had the opportunity to teach real world science to high school students, which I enjoyed immensely. I learned a lot about different teaching styles and took a course in inquiry learning. I taught the college freshmen biology labs at my graduate school and I have mentored high school and college students in several laboratories I have worked in. I recently designed and implemented a hands-on science field trip for the pre-K classes at my daughter’s school. Tutoring and teaching have always come quite naturally; the ability to see the struggle from the student's perspective, and recognizing the demand for creative explanations to old problems, are the core of my now developed skills as an educator. I have volunteered in Title 1 classrooms in St. Louis through Teach for America and have been assisting high school students for standardized tests for the last 5 years. I began my college experience as a biology major. During my studies I found that my true love was not in the field of biology, it was in the field of teaching. I believe all children have the ability/aptitude to learn the information given to them, but it's the way that information is presented that will stay with your child forever. I started tutoring math when I attended Faulkner State College. I then attended the University of South Alabama where I tutored math and physics. I have tutored all levels of math and also tutored not only physics, but lab activites as well.
I have always been a quick learner when it comes to mathematics. It is something that comes almost natural to me. With that said, I understand that this is not the case for everyone. I feel that a good majority of people hate math because they don't understand math, and because they don't understand math right away, they don't try to understand it. I had a wise professor once tell me, "Math isn't difficult; there is no such thing as difficult math. It just seems difficult because you haven't learned it yet".
