Early Childhood Educator and Encourager

I believe that learners are most successful when they are confident in their abilities. I generally begin by assessing a child's present independent functioning level and slowly building on that. Nothing is more motivating than intrinsic rewards, so I strive to make the learner aware of their growth. I encourage them to celebrate every break through and to minimize the importance of errors. I stress that errors are simply stepping stones to the next level of competence.
I have over thirty years teaching experience in the Chicago Public Schools. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, a Master of Arts degree in special education, and a Master of Divinity degree. I have taught children ages 3 - 15 and tutored youth up to age 18. I am particularly skilled at helping young children develop readiness skills.

My 9 year old has ADD and severe dyslexia so i have to employ many different styles to meet her needs. Being a great teacher is all about knowing and understanding your student and how they learn.
I am currently pursuing my BS degree in business management and finance. I have completed all of my math requirements and passed calculus with an "A" average. I home school my 9 year old daughter and really enjoy watching her learn and grow.

I have been teaching for 29 years. I have a Master's in Education and I am currently finishing my Speech degree. I have taught preschool special education, deaf education/hearing impairment K-5th grade and K/first grade. My passion is reading and literacy skills which I implement with my school age children with hearing impairment. I am licensed in prek/K-12 special ed, prek- 8th grade, reading and hearing impairment. My speech and language license is pending. One size does not fit all. My passion, is to instill the love of reading into all children, as I did with my own, and as I try to with my high school students. Reading is the base of all education. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style changes to fit the requirements of the subject and the needs of my students. I find that presenting and explaining works best for language arts and history, concept teaching works best for science, and direct instruction works best for mathematics. I also take into account the learning preferences of my students: left or right brained, visual, spatial, or kinesthetic because each prefers different treatment. As a tutor I strive to teach each student in the instructional method they prefer because this leads to an increased comfort level and willingness to learn, and it also enables them to process the material faster.
