After retiring from baking, I completed my education at Vermont Tech with a degree in Information Technology.
I enjoy passing on my skills and knowledge to others. I have trained many apprentices in baking as a professional and conducted many classes. I have tutored on a volunteer basis with the Holyoke Tutor/Mentor Program for more than a year. I have also tutored privately. My experience has been with adults, however, I would like to add experience working with secondary school students. I can help with SAT's, MCAS, and just provide support for a student who needs some extra help.
I like to get a sense of what the student already knows and try to build on that knowledge.

I like to get to the point of certain problems, such as reading the child/student when I see them, ask them some questions about the subjects they need help in and why they need help. I have worked with Infants-School age for over 5 years, and enjoy being there to help someone in need. I believe in giving back, because so many of us are blessed already.
As an early childhood teacher, I have had several opportunities to help children (school age), to do homework. I also was a tutor in high school to a boy for just Algebra, which then turned around to being all of his subjects and helping him keep on track. The hardest thing for me was that he had only lived in the U.S. for four years, and had trouble speaking English. After each session of tutoring, I would grab the Scrabble board, which encouraged him to use more words, learn new words, and have fun while doing so.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working in Special Education for ten years, four years as a tutor at Nashoba Regional High School and six years as a teacher. I have earned my Masters + 30 in my field. When I started teaching, I was working with students with emotional/behavioral disabilties at Fitchburg High School, but for the past four years I have been working at Leominster High School as a math inclusion teacher in the Algebra I and Geometry classes. I have experience tutoring students in Geometry and other subjects as well outside of school, for I have been tutoing for various districts for at least nine years.
I generally work with students with special needs in the regular education classes. What I often find in Geometry is that many of the students are lacking or forgetting the basic Algebra skills that they need to succeed in the classroom, so I do a lot of remediation, if necessary. I have taught in both public schools and a school for multiple handicapped children. I am also experienced with high achieving physics students. I believe in learning through experience, and finding a venue that the learner understands to set the experience. I also believe in test taking , essentialist philosophy, because test taking to demonstrate comprehension is necessary to communicate understanding and advancement to college and beyond.
My teaching experience spans college freshmen physics to middle school math. I converted to education after 20 years as a materials engineer in a number of industrial manufacturing companies. I have completed a state certified certificate program and did my student teaching in physics at a local high school. I have experience tutoring high school level students in geometry and college students in genetics, chemistry, and other subjects. I’ve always worked well with kids, possibly because I understand some of the difficult times they may be going through. I have run review sessions that involved tutoring many students at a time as well as one-on-one sessions, and my tutees have found my teaching methods very helpful. I also have experience volunteering in youth programs in Costa Rica and in the U.S. where I facilitated group after-school activities.
My method is to help the student become an active learner will eventually be able to learn independently. Although I am capable of giving a lecture about a subject, I tend not to lecture students because they often become bored and uninvolved. Instead, I ask questions and involve the student in any way possible. I also like to praise student ... read more

During my studies at UMass Amherst, I have had extensive coursework in Physics, gaining a solid grounding in mathematics in the process. For the past two years I have worked at the Learning Resource Center at UMass, as both a tutor and supplemental instructor for Physics classes. As a tutor I aided students one-on-one with courses ranging from all areas of Physics to Math. As a supplemental instructor for Physics, I conducted classes alongside the students' lectures, giving students an opportunity for extra practice with the material and to have difficult topics presented from a different angle.
I have always enjoyed helping students better understand and even enjoy the classes they may be having trouble with. I believe that even with daunting subjects like Physics and Math, any student can learn if they just discover how to relate to the course and make it more familiar. Helping t ... read more

I have always enjoyed both the humanities and sciences. At Virginia Tech, I majored in Philosophy and Minored in Statistics and Business. Since graduation, I have worked primarily in an engineering setting performing statistical analysis and other tasks typically performed by a test & validation engineer. Next fall I am starting a masters program at Northeastern University for Industrial Engineering. I have substitute taught for the Hopkinton Public School system and the Auburn Public School system. I enjoy teaching students of all ages.
I feel that I excel in putting myself in the student's shoes. By trying to understand their thought process, I can best teach by making sure the student follows the logic of the subject.
