Working at the Nashville Transition Center, essentially a half-way house for children aged 12-18 with criminal and/or troubled backgrounds, my senior year of college changed my outlook on tutoring tremendously because it opened my eyes to the challenges many face. Majoring in communications in college exposed me to a variety of literature. I took classes in English, script writing, and literature. I also learned about vocal production and public speaking. As I earned a Master of Arts in the dramatic performance field, I taught freshman students a basic speech course for two years. After graduation, I continued onto college faculty and taught for two more years teaching public speaking, voice and communication, and drama courses. I also honed my writing skills as a graduate student analyzing literature and writing an original play as part of my final project.
