The skills you use to teach yourself the material can be directly applied to someone else, especially when you find something does not click at first. I have a number of mnemonics for helping my tutees retain the material they've spent time learning. In college I don't tutor professionally because of time constraints, but I help other students understand problems they may be having difficulty with. I have had the wonderful pleasure of teaching children for quite some time. Just as I do, each child learns in their own way. I work to find examples from my own educational experiences that will show them that I empathize with their need as well as to help that light bulb go on for them. I have always loved learning and sharing what I have learned. One of my proudest achievements was helping a sixteen year old girl learn long division. I discovered that she was not retarted, but simply had a hand eye coordination problem. (I had her turn the lined paper 90 degrees.)
