Poetry is one of my top subjects! In addition to having taught English at the middle and high school levels for 18 years, I have been a poet myself for more than 40 years.

My teaching style...? I do not have only one; part of the point of tutoring is the ability to truly tailor styles/strategies to individuals or small groups. I must say that I am the funniest person I know, and I crack myself up all the time. Humor is always one of my favorite/best strategies.
I am a certified teacher of French and English; I have taught both subjects at the middle and high school levels for 18 years. In addition, I have 6 years of tutoring experience before becoming a teacher. I have worked with students of all ages, elementary through college. I am one course shy of my Masters' in French. I have worked with inner-city middle school students for more than 10 years, through a program called "Math Corps." (Google it.)

A Little Bit About Me...

Tutored students as a part of an after school program with inner-city, Washington High School. Assisted the struggling students with brainstorming paper topics, clearly communicating ideas, general textbook use, critical thinking, future goal making. I also made a point to get to the students as people not projects. Throughout college I regularly worked with Spanish speaking students to develop clear papers on a variety of subjects. Since being awarded a master's degree in 2008, I've taught English composition, literature, and reading comprehension courses at Wayne State University, Henry Ford Community College, Oakland Community College, and Jackson Community College. The collaborative learning approach, where students are encouraged to discuss what and how they're learning, is most effective. Students tend to engage much better with course material when the instructor has discussions with them, as opposed to lecturing at them.
