I help my students to ask questions about why something is this way or that way. It is not as simple as just memorizing subject matter in order to regurgitate it for the upcoming test. The purpose of teaching is to help others understand something that is known as true.
I was on honor roll in high school on a consistent basis. My best subjects were English and Writing. I attended Pennsylvania State University for Communications with a focus on English Writing and the study of Film and Media Arts. My comments on tutoring English : I instructed middle school students in a self-contained classroom for several years and taught all the core subjects: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. During this time, I worked collaboratively with general education teachers to create lessons and plan instruction.

My career as a teacher has taught me the importance of extending learning beyond the classroom. English is one of my top subjects! I have taught ESL (English-as-a-Second-Language) for almost 30 years now. I have also worked for many years now as a proofreader and editor, specializing in polishing academic texts written by non-native speakers of English.

Although grammar is important, languages are acquired overwhelmingly by listening (60%) and speaking (30%), whereas only 5% each by reading and writing. I view myself more as a coach than a "teacher", using a modern didactic method also known as accelerated learning. Learning should be fun, otherwise, something is not right, and I always try to find out what that "something" is.
In the past 30 years, languages have been my passion. I have worked as a teacher, proofreader/editor, and also as a translator. I have taught everything from classes to private lessons, children to senior citizens with success and enthusiasm. I always try to find out what my students love, and start working from this to help them achieve their goals.
