I have six years of tutoring college and high schools students in Math and Statistics courses. I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the Department of Statistics of George Mason University for two years (2010-2011) and tutored college Statistics. I have been a tutor of the AVID program at Falls Church High School since 2006 and work with students in Algebra I, II, Geometry, PreCalculus, and AP Statistics.
I do not give you the answers, but I help you figure out the answer for yourselves. First, we read the problem together to make sure that you read the problem carefully and understand what is being asked. Then, we go through understanding definitions, concepts, and formulas that you can use. You do the math/algebra, but I am there with you to help you go over confusing parts of the problem. I emphasize understanding the principle as opposed to just “getting the answer”. Sometimes a student will get frustrated with me because of that, but I’m committed to teaching how to fish and not just handing out fish. For example, with a mathematical problem, I may throw out additional problems revolving around the same principle at hand to make sure the student really understands as opposed to just getting past one question.
