I try to find an area of interest in the student and then show how learning the material we are discussing relates to that interest. It is important that they understand that learning is closely tied to their happiness in life. I find analogies to be my favorite style in making points to be learned.
Most recently I have been selected to conduct clases in math for students wanting to get their GED. Previous students have often remarked on my practical teaching style, relying on real world examples and explanations for business and mathematics. The only way to remember information long term is to relate it to something tangible, especially in subjects like statistics and economics.
