I like to explain the concept while drawing pictures or showing some example problems, then have them work through some problems. I'll explain more thoroughly reiterating some key points after the initial exposure, and then try to pick out weaknesses while watching the problem set progress and work on those weak points. I have a rare gift of being able to impart practical examples of academic principles. In one experience with a former student I explained calculus in a way that she could relate the rate of change to a physical experience in a way that it came alive. When principles are understood in a practical and physical manner students are bound to to have a solid understanding of the fundamentals and are better able to both retain and build upon them.
