Also, I'm the oldest sibling of four, I have had many years of helping out with homework and tutoring in reading, writing and math. I have taken several courses on the different styles of learning. I try to find out what style works best for my students and work from there. I know several ways to solve Chemistry problems and I try different ones if the first method does not work. I have learned to use many analogies when teaching Biology. I find that students remember more when they are able to compare a concept to something they are alreaday familiar with.
I attended Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan, one of the top 2 school in teaching in Michigan. In college, I tutored Biology and Chemistry. My teaching style has evolved somewhat since then. I mostly give mini-lectures immediately followed by student problem solving work. I then get input from the students on how to solve a problem, and then show them the way I did it. We also debate the different ways of approaching the problem. I do stress, as much as possible, the development of critical thinking skills. I find that a key skill here is that the student should try and develop the patience and fortitude to struggle with understanding complex chemical principles (easier said than done?).
