Wanting to teach is the major reason I got my PhD. I've always had a love of learning, and want to be able to share that with students. It is important to understand that all students are different and no one approach will work for all students. In my experience teaching both as a lecturer and on an individual basis, when dealing with a student one-on-one, the student and the tutor need to be equal partners in the session. The focus needs to be on what the student is having trouble with and the tutor acting as a guide. As someone who has benefited from excellent teachers in my education, I try to use what I have learned from them in my teaching. I believe the best approach is one where self-motivation from within is encouraged, as any subject is difficult without the right motivation. I have been a substitute teacher for about 10 years specializing in math & physics. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering plus 20+ years of maintenance/engineering experience. I incorporate practical examples in teaching to give students in depth knowledge in a practical sense. I gather my examples from my varied career experiences from the Military, Aircraft, Engineering, Manufacturing/Maintenance & Computer fields. I sporadically tutors students in my specialty.
