A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching children at all levels. I find that children learn at different speeds and by different means. So, to be truly effective you have to present the information to the broadest base of students and hope you address all their needs. Having a great level of flexibility in your lesson plans is need to ensure that no one student falls behind.
Over the past year, I served as an Americorps volunteer in an inner city charter school with an emphasis on character education. I worked one on one with students helping them with math, reading, and science skills. I assisted in classroom teaching of mini lessons too. I also helped with their after-school program, I also created supplemental study guides and multimedia software to help students to improve their study skills. As a first generation college student, I appreciated when teachers made me feel special, and I try to do the same. I was a Resident Assistant and Wellness Coordinator for a dormitory at WVU for three years, where I received a Resident Assistant of the Year Award. I currently teach four sections of general biology lab and two sections of comparative anatomy lab. I was awarded the 2010 Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year award for the Department of Biology with a 93% evaluation rate. I held extra tutoring sessions in my free time.I adored getting to know them better, giving them more one on one teaching, and building a trusting relationship with over 200 students each semester.

I graduated from IUP with a degree in Biology Education. I am certified in Biology and Middle School Science. I taught for one semester at Central Bucks School District where I taught Academic Biology, Astronomy and Oceanography. I then taught two years at Gateway School District where I taught 8th grade physical science. I now have a permanent position at Yough School District where I teach 7th grade Life Science. I am also currently pursuing my Masters in Education.
The purpose of my teaching is to allow every student to succeed. I will try any way possible to reach this goal for every child. Working in the sciences, I feel that inquiry learning is important and hands-on experience is essential. Each student has their own way of learning best and I try to find that learning style and use it whenever possible.
