As a student of history I tend to emphasize that nothing happens in a vacuum. People and events must be placed in a context. Understanding when and where is an important first step to understanding why, whether the subject be literature, theology, philosophy, or politics. Source materials must be central to any academic undertaking. Every reputable campus has at least one library containing printed resources that are invaluable. Additionally, every student should have access at home to very basic resources such as a dictionary, a thesaurus, and perhaps an encyclopedia. I dread the day that printed material becomes unfashionable. My formal experience as a tutor is minimal. However I have been called upon by several friends and acquaintances to assist in academic assignments with which they had been struggling. Effective teaching requires goal-setting and patience on the parts of both the instructor and the student. We are a team! I am simply there to facilitate their education. I first like to understand the student's learning style, as we all have different methods of learning. Some are visual, others do better with reading a text, or using examples. I use a variety of methods to teach my students, depending on age. I also want to learn where and why the student is struggling with the subject. I make my tutoring sessions interesting so that I capture the student's attention and thoroughly engage him/her. I am patient, understanding, and considerate of my students, instilling confidence and pride in learning.
