I had excelled in calculus during my freshman year of college, and I was recommended by my teachers to become a supplemental instruction (SI) tutor. I tutored students in calculus for the remaining 3 years of my undergraduate studies with SI. I was supported through a teaching assistantship (TA) during my graduate studies where I taught introductory geology lab. TAs were given a general guideline of what to teach, but not necessarily materials to use. I developed course and testing materials that I and other incoming TAs used as well. I also tutored student-athletes in calculus and geology throughout my graduate career. I find an interactive, Socratic teaching style in which I encourage the student to discover the answers on their own to understand why something works the way it does is a very effective approach for me rather than just lecturing, particularly for younger learners. I find it equally important for students to understand the why of what they are learning as well as the how and the what. I believe that students' multiple intelligences should be harnessed and that if students don't understand information presented initially, it is up to the teacher to find different ways of presenting the information so that the student can make it his or her own.
