My teaching style is very student driven. I take students interest in account when helping them. The ultimate goal of education is teaching students to overcome their weakness and teach them to use tools, so they can love learning. My hope is that students learn to see their growth in order to be content with their education experiences.

Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. Part of my job is to work in small ratios with honors students who have disabilities. This "study skills" class often requires one-on-one tutoring.
As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead.

For this reason, I prefer to change tasks frequently and use a variety of fun games to switch up the pace of the session. I have been interested in education my entire life. After receiving my B.A. from Penn State University, I was an elementary teacher in my hometown, Oxford, Pennsylvania. I believe that all children can learn you just have to find their style. Each person has their own unique learning style. That is why tutoring can truely help students become better learners because a one on one approach can help them find their style and become their own advocates.
I knew I wanted to teach at grade 5. All my education from that time on was directed to become a teacher. During my graduate work at the University of Oregon I majored in Reading. It has become my passion to help all students love reading and become comfortable reading. This passion has been driven by the fact that I am dyslexic and understand how difficult it is to not be able to read well.
