During my years teaching English literature, at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver Canada, I quickly discovered that the most rewarding and effective moments between student and instructor occur in one-to-one meetings. The tutoring environment is the ideal classroom, where a single student’s learning needs, academic desires and questions can be fully catered to, fulfilled and explored. I have worked with first-year university students, middle school students, all levels of high school students, and older adults. My advanced education, extensive experience, sincere respect for my students, and genuine love and enthusiasm for literature and learning make me an effective and valuable educator. I possess both a Master's degree and a BA in English literature, with a minor degree in History; and as the only member of my immediate family to have earned a college degree, I ... read more

Let's start working together to reach your goals of success!

My teaching style is fun: relaxed and engaging for my students and for me too. I am serious about giving my clients the best and richest learning situation as possible. I use a modality designed just for that student and perhaps not offered at school. Since I am in a one on one setting I can ideally focus on just that one student's personal needs. I communicate clearly with all stake holders to ensure I am meeting the learner's needs and expectations. I know some of our relationships will be short term to get past an academic challenge and others may be longer to meet your needs. Whatever the length or circumstances I want it to be the best, positively memorable and educationally worthwhile experience for my student.
Throughout my successful career as a teacher and school counselor, I've instructed every level from kindergarten to college level. Likewise I've had the privilege of ... read more

My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : I've taken several courses in Shakespeare, but since graduating college the only thing my anthology has been good for is standing on to reach things on high shelves. I'd love to put it to good use again!

Because English and literature is subjective, I use a nondirective approach to ensure that the student is exercising their creative problem solving skills and critical thinking skills. Basically, I ask them about their interpretation of the text or their own writing. With grammar, I typically model the correct use for the student two or three times, and then have them finish finding patterns and correcting mistakes themselves.
I've taken courses in tutoring, grammar, Shakespeare, and writing composition, as well as worked in the University Writing Center at my university as a writing consultant. I currently tutor three Middle Eastern students in writing composition, conventions of English grammar, and health. I do freelance proofreading and editing.

More About This Tutor...

I believe it is important to get to know my students by discovering their likes and dislikes about reading and writing, what their interests are, and assessing their confidence levels. While there is no substitute for understanding the "rules" of composition, I believe that learning to enjoy the subject is priority one. By reducing the student's fears or concerns and making it fun, understanding and fluency will eventually follow. Adapting to the needs of the person and adjusting to his or her best learning style is also important. By teaching the skills of invention, in whatever mode best suits the individual, the student can become an independent learner and a self-starter.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and working with children. I love English. I love seeing the expression in the eye of a student who finally understands the concepts. I know what it is like to struggle and get frustrated. In Jr high I was tutored in English and math. Once I understood the concepts there was no stopping me. I would love to help your student the way someone helped me once. I am a patient, kind and loving mother. I believe English is the corner stone of education, and the key to future success. Many times a loving teacher, who takes the time necessary, is all a student needs to succeed.

I greatly enjoy helping students come to the “Aha” moments of understanding. Almost nothing gives me greater joy than seeing a student’s eyes light up as he or she makes connections between new and old information. I am very empathetic when a student feels blocked in his or her progress and work hard to find the element that will unblock the learning process. I am easy going and have a good sense of humor, while at the same time I am able to see educational objectives and focus on getting there. I think that every student can learn if they are given the right encouragement and skills. I do my best to do that for my students.

A Little Bit About Me...

My love of reading and writing has led me to excel in 2 languages. An English major at Carleton College, I mastered the art of putting thoughts on paper to persuade, compare, or explicate; as well as how to read for meaning. Later at the Sorbonne in Paris, I transferred these talents to French. I have since taught and tutored reading, writing, and speaking in both languages in the U.S. and abroad.
My teaching style is active and enthusiastic. I show students clues and shortcuts in all sorts of subjects so that learning can be fun and even easy. I am tolerant and patient, while at the same time I request diligence and assiduousness. I revel in the success of my students, thanks to their efforts and hard work. I love to see students finally understand something they find challenging.

Students interested in counseling regarding preparation for a professional school would also be welcome.
After spending 20 years in school, I have learned how to study for just about anything. My undergraduate experience was weighted equally between the science classes necessary for entry into veterinary school, and my passion for the written word, which I pursued through the Oregon State University Honor's college. Veterinary school reinforced my knowledge in all the life sciences, in addition to honing my study skills.
