The Achievement Centers, our after school tutorial/diagnostic clinic and before and after school care, is available for all ages and subjects. Tutoring and diagnostic testing is available after school, evenings (Monday – Friday) and Saturday mornings. The clinic is available year-round. Our testing clinician and school psychologist offer a Psychoeducational Evaluation to all new students. The testing is scheduled for two three hour sessions on separate days during after school hours. The evaluation consist of various test measuring a student’s cognitive abilities, processing skills, IQ, and academic levels. The evaluation will determine a student’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as how they think, reason and process information. A conference will be held with the family and/or the student. I have been teaching for 25 years. I began as a high-school teacher, taught grade school and special education, and then spent 20 years as a university professor of English and philosophy. I belong to Mensa and the NCTM, and have excellent English and decent Spanish speaking and writing skills. I have taught and tutored in mathematics and computer science for quite awhile, and I earned a 95% on my PSAT and a 32 on my ACT. Generally, I'm a constructivist, and I believe the best method of tutoring is providing a completely individuated scaffold for any student. My teaching style is one which engages the student actively in the learning process. I have used the "popcorn" technique in a classroom, where I call out "popcorn", then call on someone at random. This ensures that each student in the class is following, or else they lose their turn to read. If I'm working w/ a student w/ poor reading skills, I allow them to read, and help them w/ the difficult words, encouraging them to sound out the word.
