My comments on tutoring ACT : Math and Science portions only!

I started tutoring in high school for extra credit. I have primarily tutored in mathematics and general chemistry! I tutored a girl in Algebra 1 for a year, helped my best friend and her Mom with college mathematics, and worked through college algebra with my husband. In college I was a teachers assistant for general chemistry 1 and tutored in quantitative chemical analysis. Since then I have tutored a gentlemen for the math portion of his GED. Basically, I love the one-on-one opportunity to help people to find that "light-bulb moment" where the math and science is no longer torture, but instead it makes sense! :)
Very much based on working with what the student knows. I tend to start by having them explain to me what they are doing and what they think. I then provide some guidance and walk through a sample problem with them. I ask that they try another problem like it on their own ... read more

Math and Science Tutoring

In terms of online tutoring. I make use of a headset microphone and a touch tablet. As well as many free online applications, such as a whiteboard, Skype, and educational resources. During session I prefer to use the course work and text assigned to the student. Doing so allows for the structure of our sessions to easily mesh with those of the course.

Although I enjoy research and have developed a strong background in education, I find the most joy when presenting new information to my peers or finding small opportunities to teach science lessons. It is my personal belief that all students have the ability to succeed in their personal goals, and it is my job as an educator to help students reach and exceed their potential. As a tutor, I look forward to working with students to not only understand the basic concepts of science, but also develop a sense of passion for learning and a work ethic that will serve them the rest of their lives. Students must be challenged, not coddled. Students at all levels need to be pushed to find their limits and then move beyond them. Only then can they achieve real growth. We must use education as a tool to educate the next generation not only for employment but also for citizenship. In so doing, we need to take into account historical precedents and objective reality ... read more

I love watching and learning from children. I believe that learning is closely related to confidence. I like to take the time to get to know children and understand what they like so that I can better understand how their brain works and how they process information. In understanding what they like, this gives me the ability to let them show me something new. The best way that I retained information in college was to teach someone else what I was studying. As the children learn the new information, I like to have them show me the new information the same way they did their hobby or interest.
